Shady Part of Me Review
There lives a girl who believes that she can only rely on herself, but there is one that is always close to her side that is willing to help if only she would acknowledge her. In The Shady Part of Me you will take on both characters, a girl lost in her sorrows, and her shadow. They both have a mind of their own, and can do incredible things, but when they work together they might just be able to save the girl from her one glaring fear.
You will navigate through the game bouncing between the 3 dimensional world of the girl, and the 2 dimensional world of her shadow. To successfully get through the levels of the game you will have to move objects and activate switches in both worlds. You will also have to keep an eye out for origami birds, it’s not necessary, but I have to admit I enjoyed the challenge of trying to get all of them. I failed to get all of them, but that didn’t stop me from trying.
There’s definitely a deep story that will pull at your heartstrings as the game progresses, and you will encounter three main voices that try to untangle the past, and free the girl’s and shadow’s future, and I have to admit that there are times where some of the voices get jumbled up and I couldn’t quite figure out from which perspective it was coming from. That being said, I enjoyed the story from start to finish. There’s definitely a hopelessness, a sense of loss, and the feeling of hiding inside one’s self in the art style. When dealing with the shadow’s 2D world I did enjoy the added challenge of trying to figure which way is up when having to jump from one wall/floor’s shadow to an adjacent one.
If you're looking for a challenging platformer that requires you to exist in both 2D and 3D, and you’re ready to take on a story that will frustrate you, make you emotional, and on occasion make you want to scream at the character, then this is a game you’re going to want to check out. I was able to get through the entire game in 5 hours, and I have to say that in terms of the challenge there is no lull so you’re going to get your money’s worth.
