Dead Secret Review
You are a newspaper reporter who has been relegated to nothing but fluff pieces, but you have discovered a strange story that has been ruled a suicide, but to you there seems to be something fishy about it. So on a whim you decide to explore the house of Professor Harris Bullard, and this is where your adventure into Dead Secret begins.
The game is in first person perspective and you can definitely tell that VR was part of the equation. The game has an option to have a controller, but I think the developer had the controller setup that goes with a VR system in mind. When I tried to play with a standard gamepad the game felt almost unplayable. So I went with your standard click of the mouse to do the interactions. I have to admit that even going that route still caused some clunkiness to occur when trying to play with a little bit of finesse. There are times where you want to interact with something but because of how you clicked on the screen to move you’ll walk right past it and will have to try from different angles. The interesting thing is that even with the frustration that came with this I kept with the game, there was enough there that I kept going.
The majority of the game is centered around solving puzzles and collecting information. Some of the puzzles you can solve right away while some of them will require multiple steps to complete. I will admit that I didn’t end up solving all of the puzzles, but I was able to complete the game. Now I also mentioned that you’ll be collecting information, and you’ll be using the information that you find to determine what may have actually happened to Professor Bullard. There are a couple of different characters that interacted with the professor near his death, and it is up to you to figure out if any are guilty of killing him.
This wasn’t actually that long of a game, but I definitely feel like I got my money’s worth. There were a couple of times during the game where you will have to start over from an autosaved checkpoint, but to not ruin some of the twists I won’t reveal why these occur, just believe me when I say you’re not going to see it coming. This is also a tough game to recommend or say STAY AWAY. I think you would probably have a better experience if you are able to go the VR route, but don’t quote me on that. I really really liked the story, it was well crafted. It had plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing up to the very end. So if you’re looking for a very well crafted story with a game that can be pretty clunky at times I would tell you to get this game. If you have issues playing a game where you notice right off the bat that the controls are going to be a struggle then save yourself some grief and avoid this game. As I stated before even though I had some serious issues with the controls from time to time, I enjoyed the game.
