Overwatch 2 Approaches

We are closing in on that magical date, October 4th, the launch of Overwatch 2, and of course the closing of Overwatch. This will of course bring some changes to the series, and Blizzard has started to release some of the details on what some of them will actually be. To start off they are going to a seasonal model to deliver new content to the game. That means, theoretically, that every 9 weeks Overwatch 2 will receive an update. I know what you’re thinking, “WOW, so what they should have done from the start with the original.”, and as of right now that seems to be the plan. I know I personally harped over the stale content of Overwatch when compared to all the competitors, so here’s hoping.

So what all is planned so far:

As you can see there’s going to be 3 new heroes, 6 new maps, and the new Battle Pass right off the bat. So let’s talk about the Battle Pass for a second. There are going to be two different versions: the Free and the Premium. If you have played free-to-play games lately you probably already know the differences, but just in case you don’t, each season will have a Battle Pass, this will be a chart of unlockables that you can achieve by playing the game. If you go with the Premium you’ll be able to unlock the “shinier” items. In Season 1 there will be 20 free unlockables with about 60+ extra for the premium version. Some of the unlockables will be the new characters, so just keep that in mind. Speaking of which, if you have the Premium Battle Pass for Season 1 you’ll automatically unlock the new character Kiriko, if you go the Free route you’ll just have to grind through those challenges to unlock her. So how much is this Battle Pass going to cost you, to go from Free to Premium? As it currently stands, and for at least Season 1’s it will be 1000 Overwatch Coins (around $10).

I do want to point out that only the first 2 seasons are currently mapped out, and hopefully when Season 1 ends there’s a better roadmap of what Season 3 will hint at. I know that there are those who are still clamoring for the PvE mode that was promised but never given, as of yet. What I’m more interested in is the additional characters (how often are they produced after the first 2 seasons), the additional maps (after Season 2 they will be released on every other season), and of course the new game modes. There’s a lot of promise and a lot of unknown still surrounding this game.

What I do like to see, and I wish that everyone would just jump on this bandwagon, is cross progression. This basically means that all of your progress and content is available on all platforms that support Overwatch 2, it also means that there’s going to be cross-platform play, which means that I don’t have to be on the same platform as my friends to join in on a game.
